Once a month at MOTea & Coffee, our café becomes the setting for something a little more mystical — a tarot reader joins us for the day, offering visitors the chance to explore life’s questions through the ancient art of tarot.
Whether you’re curious, seeking clarity, or just want to experience something new, here’s what to expect if you decide to book a reading.
Please note: All readings are for entertainment purposes only and are strictly for those aged 18 and over.
Meet Our Tarot Reader
Our in-house tarot reader brings with her over 60 years of experience. She first began reading as a teenager, learning from her mother and grandmother who read tea leaves. Her very first deck? A humble pack of playing cards — a gift that sparked a lifelong passion. In fact, she believes tarot cards should always be a gift, not bought for yourself.
Although life (and work) pulled her away from reading for a while, retirement allowed her to return to it, often appearing at local fetes, fairs, and events alongside her sister. Today, we’re lucky to have her reading here with us at MOTea & Coffee.
Which Tarot Spreads Are Used?
During your reading, you can choose from two different spreads:
- The Taster Spread – This is a 6-card spread (expandable to 9) that explores the present, past events, and possible future developments. It also gives insight into your strengths and weaknesses — a great introduction if you’re new to tarot.
- The Hemisphere Spread – A more detailed reading with 7 cards, each of which can be expanded with up to three additional cards. This spread goes deeper and is perfect if you’d like a broader view of what may be unfolding in your life.
“Tarot is not written in stone,” she explains. “It can guide, warn, and even influence future choices. A reading might help someone come to terms with something or offer a new perspective when they’re facing a decision.”
Who Comes for a Reading?
Most of the café’s tarot clients are women, typically from young middle age and up, although the number of men requesting readings is growing. Many people come just out of curiosity, without a specific question in mind. Others bring a clear query they want insight on.
If you’re a returning visitor, don’t worry — she makes a point of not remembering past readings so each session is a fresh experience.
What Makes a Challenging Reading?
Some clients prefer to stay very reserved during their reading, offering little reaction — and that’s completely fine. “I don’t rely on body language,” she explains. “The cards do the talking. I simply interpret what I see.” In fact, she adds, “some of the quietest clients have come back afterwards and said it was spot on.”
The only people she won’t read for? Family. As she puts it, “I already know too much!”
Her Favourite Card
The Star.
If you’re ever nervous about getting a “scary” card — don’t be. “The imagery isn’t meant to be taken literally. Even the most dramatic card doesn’t mean your reading will be full of doom and gloom.”
Rituals & Café Favourites
Every tarot day begins with a little ritual: a fresh cafetiere of coffee and an apricot croissant crown (yes, we always keep one ready just for her!).
Book Your Spot
Our tarot sessions often fill up quickly, so we recommend booking ahead. It’s a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon — whether you’re looking for guidance, insight, or just something a little different over coffee and cake.
